What is Botulinum Toxin Treatment?

Botulinum Toxin is a protein made by bacteria called Clostridium botulinum.  The names comes from the it's origin story.  Botulinum comes from the latin word "botulus", which means sausage.

Botulinum Toxin is a neuro-modulator.  In cosmetic use, it temporarily changes signalling between nerve and muscle.  This stops the treated muscle from flexing which means the muscle relaxes and the skin no longer wrinkles.

What is Botox?

Botox is the most well known brand of botulinum toxin.  It is made by the global pharmaceutical company Allergan.

It contains a natural protein called onabotulinumtoxin A, which is produced by natural bacteria.

Botox is most commonly used to reduce the appearance of facial wrinkles and fine lines by temporarily reducing the strength of the underlying muscles.  It is also used to treat various medical conditions such as chronic migraine, excessive sweating and certain muscle disorders.

What is Bocouture?

Bocouture is a brand of botulinum toxin made by the global pharmaceutical company Merz.

It contains a natural protein called incobotulinumtoxin A, which is produced by natural bacteria.

Similar to Botox, Bocouture is also used to reduce the appearance of facial wrinkles and lines.  In cosmetic use, it is licenced for the treatment of moderate to severe frown lines between the eyebrows.

What Is Bespoke Botox?

Bespoke tailored botulinum treatment is the only kind Dr Gwen Adey Aesthetics offers. Your face, your anatomy, is unique, so your treatment must be made to measure for you if you want to look great.

Anatomy is the first element of Bespoke Botox.  Just a a bespoke suit would be made to your individual measurements, your ideal botox treatment must be designed for your unique facial anatomy.

This needs an expert Anatomy Assessment.  Dr Gwen has been studying facial anatomy for more than 23 years; first at degree level within her Batchelors of Dental Surgery BDS (2000-2005), then postgraduate study for examined admission to membership of the Royal College of Surgeons of Edinburgh MFDS RCS (2006-2008), in various Junior Doctor roles and then in recent years, facial aesthetics training with experts from around the globe.  So it's fair to say she knows a good amount about the muscles of the face and neck and can skillfully assess you and plan and carry out not only a safe treatment, but also a beautiful treatment that enhances the balance and harmony in your face.

Dosing is next.  Like any medicine, you want the right dose for you. Personalised medicine is quite normal with many drugs being used at different doses for different patients.  Having more of any medicine than you need, could increase your risk of side effects and it will cost more than it should.  So, the lowest effective dose is where we want to be.  If you are a new patient to Dr Gwen, she will need to find your "recipe"  or "formula" through initially treating gently and then once this has taken effect, 2-3 weeks later you will have a planned second appointment for fine tuning adjustment.

This is the process Dr Gwen uses to create your personal Bespoke Formula.  Future treatments then follow the framework of your Formula, but evolve as your face changes with time.

Is Botox Safe?

Botox has been used in general medicine for more than 47 years and it has been licensed for cosmetic medicine for 22 years.  Botox has an extremely good safety profile when used correctly.  At Dr Gwen's clinic,, safety is paramount.

At Dr Gwen's Botox Clinic, the botulinum toxin products used are Botox (Allergan) and Bocouture (Merz).  All products are supplied by prescription from the UK official distributors (HealthXchange and Church Pharmacy respectively) to ensure only genuine product ever reaches the clinic.
